Welcome Roxie!
Third Graders were excited to start the week with our new class pet, Roxie the gerbil. Roxie is named after our current Read Aloud book, Roxie and the Hooligans. Much like her namesake, Roxie is spunky and cute as a button!
Reading
This week, Third Graders discussed what it meant to read with grit. Students followed the lesson by working on self-assessments where they scored themselves on the grit they use while reading. Students were excited to see how they scored and to look into what areas they could improve in their reading. Students also began working on specific examples to, “Climb the Hurdle of Hard Words”. This week, we focused on “chunking” words, or recognizing the parts of words that we know in order to piece together the full word. It was compelling to watch them apply their self-reflections into their silent reading.
Science
Third Graders were enthusiastic about our third investigation into the Physics of Sound. This week, students experimented with how sound waves travel through air and water. Students compared the vibrations of tuning forks in open air vs. the sounds created in their sound tubes. Students also used stethoscopes to listen for sounds they created in a basin of water. Third Graders are excited to wrap up our first science unit next week!
Specials Spotlight: Indigo Choir
Students attend Indigo Choir on Tuesdays each week. In Indigo Choir, our upper elementary students get the opportunity to delve deeper into chorus, learning new music that they often get to share with the whole school. In Indigo Choir this week, students learned new Halloween songs, and some students even got the opportunity to sing some music they had written themselves!
