Reading
This week, Third Graders finished reading “The Year of the Dog” by Grace Lin. Students were excited to learn about the Chinese New Year and what exactly it entails. Third Graders loved following the story of Pacey’s year. From making a new best friend, halting her own audition for “The Wizard of Oz”, to winning a book competition and finding her talent, Pacey had a year of friends and family and personal growth. Third Graders concluded the week by creating arcs of the story they finished, and using these arcs to work again on mastering summarizing the story!
Writing
This week, students finished writing their petitions. Our class had several issues they thought needed to be addressed, from environmental and animal rights to video game updates. Students were excited to share their writing with their own class while asking for signatures, but things really got fun when Third Graders invited our TCS Fifth Graders to stop by to read and sign their petitions as well. Third Graders were so thrilled to be adding signatures to their cause, they even brought their petitions to snack this week to ask Second Graders to sign!
Social Studies
Students delved deeper into their Asia study this week by beginning to study several Asian animals. Students were thrilled to get the chance to view “Born in China”, a documentary following four different China specific animals. Third Graders used their new findings from the documentary to compare and contrast giant pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, snow leopards, and red-crowned cranes. We think we might have seen several wheels begin turning with ideas of things to study for our upcoming Asia projects!
