Out on The Town!

Attentive Audience Members

First Grade friends were delighted to venture downtown to The Dock Street Theater this week to see “Billy, Goat, Gruff”! This attentive audience was so curious to find out how this theatrical variation of a class favorite would be portrayed on stage. First Graders brought their very best theater etiquette to Charleston Stage’s musical production and were thrilled to visit America’s first theater!  They especially enjoyed the role of the troll and were thrilled to discuss his character traits after the play!

Parts of a Whole

This week First Graders were able to deepen their understanding of fraction concepts as they investigated relationships among fraction words, meanings and symbols. Scholars were introduced to the mathematician terms, “numerator” and “denominator”, as they explored fractional parts of figures. First Graders folded paper shapes into halves, fourths, or eighths and labeled each part with the appropriate fraction symbol.

It Really Happened!

First Grade writers have been busy writing series books! This week realistic fiction writers spent time in Writing Workshop fine-tuning the realistic parts of their stories. Scholars re-read their writing while asking themselves, “Could this really happen?”. This guiding question allowed a structure to help keep their writing in the realistic fiction genre. Brave writers found ways to revise their writing and continued bringing their stories to life by unfreezing their characters and having characters talk and do things.
