Technology in the Classroom

Science

Third Graders have been studying many properties of water during this science unit. This week, students have been investigating water density and what happens when it is cooled. The idea that cold water is denser, which causes it to sink, is easier to understand when you can see it in action! Students used colored ice cubes dropped in room temperature water to watch as the color quickly settled to the bottom. The other interesting observation this week was seeing how water expands when it freezes! We measured out 40 mL in a plunger and froze it. Students were shocked that when we observed the frozen plunger, it had risen to 45 mL! There wasn’t any more water added, it was proof that water expands when it freezes.

iPads

This week, Third Graders were very excited to use their iPads for many different subjects! During Math, students who finish their work may move to the TenMarks app on their iPads. This has math assignments that either provide review and assistance or enrichment for individual students. During Reading, students have begun to research a bug of their choice to gather information on for their final project of our nonfiction reading unit. During Writing, students are using their iPads to fact check their nonfiction writing for accuracy. During Word Work, students use their iPads to practice their keyboarding skills with Keyboarding Without Tears. Lastly, students use the SeeSaw app to create a digital portfolio of works they are proud of. These purposeful uses of technology are fun for the students and great teaching tools in the classroom!

Presentations

The Cooper School values cross grade interactions among students and one way we do that is through presentations. This past week, Third Graders have gotten to attend the Fourth Grade Bee Study Presentation and play the role of parents for the First Grade Insect Museum dress rehearsal. It is a special treat for Third Graders to view the presentations that are coming up for them in the future. They got a “sneak peek” at work that they will get to do and have already begun talking about which parts seem most interesting to them.

Third Graders got to give feedback to First Graders, drawing on their memories from when they did the Insect Museum. They came back to the classroom and wrote notes of encouragement for their buddies to wish them luck in case they were feeling nervous. These are both wonderful ways that students get to celebrate with different grade levels.
