Math Facts

This week Grade 2 has started learning all sorts of shortcuts and mental tricks for addition and subtraction. For our “Easy” math facts, students are learning shortcuts for +0, +1, and +2 addition facts (1+0=1). They have also been creating addition number stories for these problems. Here is one of my favorites from class this week: “6 birds were sitting on a wire. 3 more flew up. How many birds are now on the wire?”

Stranger Than Fiction

Our little readers have been quite the “dialogue detectives” this week searching for clues in our library. Students are noticing that books with mostly dialogue are fiction and books without dialogue are non-fiction. This is especially true for their leveled books. I am encouraging students to find the joy in reading both types of books and how to identify them from the text.

Zen Masters

This week our Mindfulness Zen Masters are learning the self-guided technique of finger breathing. My goal with these activities is to give students the tools they need to manage their emotions and take control of their own bodies and minds. Using your fingers and hands while breathing acts as their anchor for focusing on the present moment. Ask your kids to teach you this technique and try at home!
