This week was an engaging time for all learners to better understand their role within the TCSMS family. Your child was able to discuss, and define the true meaning of respect. We came up with ways that respect can be demonstrated, while realizing that acts of respect truly depend on location and culture. After looking at a quote about respect, the majority favored the line, “Love people for who they are and not for what I can get from them”. We followed up with engaging and thoughtful discussion on our roles in the classroom, school, and society. To tell you the truth, they completely remixed “The Golden Rule” into a multiplex layer of admiration in high regards to other humans.

MATH

Math was an engaging time as we further explored ratios and the relationship between digits and number values. Throughout the year, your mathematicians will advance in their number sense as we explore fractions, decimals, exponents, arithmetic operations, and statistics! This week, in an effort to explore modern math, middle schoolers got to experiment with programming their own computer game. It took a lot of patience and required everyone to read and follow closely along with explicit directions! 

WRITING

Writing has been a time for writers to continue digging deeper within themselves to find their voice and express their own narrative. We jump started with important people in our lives, and places that evoke emotion and meaning. Writer’s recalled the first and last time they experienced something significant, and we dug deep to rediscover a time of realization, and awareness of a life lesson learned. We observed the work of published author, Jack Gantos, and his use of sketching and map making techniques as a way to spark ideas and begin writing. Writers then read the short story, Everything Will Be Okay by James Howe, and as a class, writers discussed many themes from the text, including animal rights, psychological impacts of sibling relationships, and what it truly means to be a man in the lens of society. Writers used graphic organizers and began working on their own short stories where they recalled upon small moments they have experienced to give their audience an inside look into that brief period of time.

SCIENCE

This week, scientists investigated weather and its effects on our earth and space. Some of the studies included tsunamis, hurricanes on Jupiter, super cells, and animal adaptations to weather changes. Newscasters loved having the opportunity to express their knowledge while producing their own TCSMS news report. 

This year may look a little different when it comes to fostering friendships, however, middle school students sure have come up with some creative ways to foster relationships in order to enrich and encourage the close knit community that we have always contributed to in previous years. We encourage middle schoolers to continue to push the envelope of cultivating relationships with the latest regulations and restrictions. If there is a will, there is a TCSMS way.
