Back From the Storm

Science

Students test the number of “passengers” each boat can hold before sinking.

In Science this week, we are studying the variables involved in sinking and floating. The students built “boats” and tested the relationships between capacity and passengers. Students are applying their investigation to real world applications in Life Boat capacities and passenger numbers.

Reading

Students annotate Because of Winn-Dixie during Book Clubs.

Students are diving into their newest Book Clubs with Because of Winn-Dixie, Holes, and Dear Mr. Henshaw. In our exploration of theme, readers have determined some amazing big ideas such as change, connection, perspective, and social issues. Students will continue to read these, and other, books through the lens of these themes and details.

Writing

Personal Narratives are well on their way in the Editing Process. Students have spent the week learning how to write personal narratives by stepping inside their story and adding  great details. They have used other authors’ words to influence their own, and practiced writing from the moment. I can’t wait to display their finished narratives soon!
