Number Lines
This week in second grade, students have been learning about number lines. They have been learning about the rules and structures that go into a number line. With a partner, they created a number line using inch tiles and rulers. This was to ensure the lines were straight and evenly placed. Later in the week, students used their own number line to play a game comparing numbers. The number line reinforces the understanding of comparing numbers and place value.
History of Thanksgiving
During this season, second graders are learning about the history of Thanksgiving. As a class, students are reading non-fiction books and gathering facts about the story of Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims. One of the tools this week was to form an opinion based on facts. Many students read that women were not allowed to vote on the Mayflower. They came together and formed the opinion that it was unfair for women, and they should have had the right to vote. Second graders are learning that the more we know and learn about, we can form our own opinions.
Polar Biome Exploration
Students have been studying the polar biome and the Inuit study. We began our journey learning about the continents and the oceans. Second graders learned songs to remember the placement and size of oceans and continents. We then started exploring the polar biome. Learning about energy, flora, and fauna. Students were so excited to learn about the animals that live there and their adaptations to live in a tundra. Next, we are beginning our learning of the Inuit people and how they survived in this biome. Students will compare the then and now of the natives and how things change over time.
