It’s been a fantastic week in third grade as we are settling into a new routine and letting our imaginations run wild as the class explores their curiosities!
Math
This week, students are nearing the end of their second unit. This unit focuses on mastering finding the area of figures, including rectangles missing side lengths and widths. Students are encouraged to use formulas and relationships, such as perimeter, to find these unknowns. For example, if they know the perimeter of a rectangle but a side width is missing, they can rearrange the perimeter formula to find the missing length. We encourage you to discuss these concepts at home and help reinforce their understanding!
Social Studies
Our third graders are continuing their investigation of their changemakers. Students have been researching figures in history that have brought significant positive change to society. Throughout this trimester students have been working hard on getting a full understanding of who their changemakers are and why they are significant to history. Through this discovery, students have started drawing portraits of their changemakers, as well as compiling a timeline of events throughout their changemaker’s life, in preparation for their final project!
SEL
Third grade’s current social emotional unit revolves around what makes them curious and how that curiosity can aid in expanding learning and understanding. To expand on this idea, Miss Ali used a plasma ball to represent the neurons in our brain firing. Students were asked to share a curiosity of theirs and touch the ball, signifying how our brain lights up when curiosity is explored and knowledge is gained.
