Storms can’t stop us!

Everyone has done a great job handling and preparing themselves for a hectic week with storms looming over us. We hope everyone stays safe and completes all work that has been assigned over the google document that has been sent by the middle school staff. All E-learning will be sent to parents emails, also the link to the work will be on all math google classrooms. As we move into October, please check the school calendar for all of the upcoming events during this month.

Math:

This week in Algebra 1, we continued to analyze equations and their relationships to tables and graphs, before learning how we can manipulate equations into different forms like slope-intercept, vertex, standard, etc. to solve systems of equations. Next week, we will learn different strategies to solve systems of equations, before taking our Mid Unit Assessment on that Thursday.

ELA:

8th grade readers learned about power dynamics between characters in fiction this week. They “mapped” the experience of power for characters in their novel as it rose and fell across the events of the plot. They also learned about the benefits of  creating a “synthesis page” in their readers notebooks to revisit and present literary theories about their novels. 8th graders prepared for their first grammar test this week on subject and predicate variations, direct and indirect objects, and subject complements.

Next week, readers will create their own synthesis page to be graded. They will also begin their first vocabulary unit.

Social Studies:

Eighth graders will be taking their first unit test on Monday. They are well prepared for it and can continue to study over the weekend. Once we finish this we will be moving onto our next unit which is industrialization. We begin with the importance of technology and its real impact on human civilization.

Science:

Eighth graders engineered and tested helmets for “Destiny” this week. We taped paint balls all over a mannequin’s head to use as our “dummy.” The students’  prototype helmets were then tested on “Destiny” as she was tossed from the balcony. If the paint balls didn’t bust, the prototype was a success. All the groups successfully accomplished the mission. The eighth graders are now working on presentations to inform the class about the aesthetic, economic, and physical constraints of engineering their helmet.

Important Dates:
