Science
Fourth graders have gotten to the bottom of the Ergstown electrical blackout! With their newfound knowledge of energy sources, how they are converted, and what outputs come from the process. The class received some new information about the fictional town that gave them a better understanding of what caused this town wide blackout. The forecast for the week of the blackout was rain, snow, and strong winds. Students used their knowledge of how the town received power through its lines and how these conditions could affect them. Through investigation, and putting all of these factors together, students were able to learn about overloading the power grid and brainstorm solutions of other ways to generate power, in an effort to prevent another blackout. Fourth graders have loved getting to investigate this make believe town and learning how energy conversions are an important part of daily life!
Writing
This week, students are expanding upon their foundational knowledge of lesser known voices from the American Revolution. After completing their research on their chosen historical figure, students have now moved on to historical fiction writing. Fourth graders have started drafting their children’s books, taking an event or period in their figure’s life, expanding and weaving fiction into their stories. Students are not only writing their own children’s books but illustrating their books as well! We are so excited to see their imaginations run wild, and read their finished books!
Math
Students have embarked on a new unit in mathematics! The class is focusing on multiplicative comparison, by comparing two numbers and solving how many times one number is larger than the other. Students are using their base knowledge of multiplication and division of fast facts to quickly be able to identify how many times as much one number is compared to another. Not only is this an important skill for real life problem solving, but is also preparing fourth graders for more advanced concepts like ratios and proportions in middle school.
Fourth graders enjoyed their Valentine’s Day Bake Sale and Celebration! Students loved giving and receiving compliments in their compliment books, as well as exchanging valentines. This class is so full of love, we are so grateful for our class and community here at TCS!
