Pass It On!

Math

This week, students have been mastering measuring angles, as well as identifying parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines. Students have been working hard on understanding and differentiating these and learning how to work with protractors to determine the size of angles. Learning how to determine whether the angle they are working with is obtuse, acute, or a right angle. Not only are students learning valuable foundational skills on these concepts, but also building vocabulary and understanding the relationship between these elements like area and perimeter.

Cherokee Study

Students are continuing to research Cherokee culture, and what their experience was like when they were uprooted from their territory. Students have begun the novel “Mary and the Trail of Tears” by Andrea Rogers. This story details Mary, a young Cherokee girl’s perspective as she and her family are uprooted from their home in Georgia, and forced to travel the Trail of Tears to their new home. While this story is fictional, it is a realistic depiction of what this experience might’ve been like. Students have been reading the novel independently and participating in class and group discussions. Followed by our group discussion, fourth graders then answer questions to solidify their comprehension of what they’re reading, using evidence from the text to support their reasoning. Students are using skills they’ve gained throughout the year like making inferences and combining them with the literary essay skills they’ve been working on. This is in anticipation of the Congressional Hearing the student will be writing arguments, and participating in the weeks to come!

Pass It On

TCS’s Pass It On event this week was a huge success! After much practice and anticipation students were able to share their self written poems with their peers and community. This annual event not only celebrates art and community, but is also held for a great cause. Students voted on supporting Friends Of

The Library this year, a nonprofit organization committed to providing resources to the community through local Charleston libraries. The proceeds from Pass It On books, as well as the books donated to the book drive will be donated to the Friends of The Library. We are overflowing with gratitude for our students, families, and community participating and attending!
