Warm Weather Brings Warm Feelings

With spring in full swing and summer’s heat just around the corner, these warmer days have everyone—myself included—thinking about fun times outside. This weather is what truly makes Charleston such a special place to live, allowing us to experience so many different experiences in such a small area. This weather also brings an end of school fever, with EVERYONE looking forward to the summer holiday. With that, it is important to remind ourselves that though we are nearing the finish line, it is important to remember how much we must still accomplish before we get there. From ERB testing, to class trips, Field Day to graduation and everything in between, this year is far from over and keeping our focus through it all has never been as important as it is now. So as we start to wrap up the year, let’s make sure we do not lose focus on all we are trying to accomplish, so we can truly enjoy the summer break!

Math:

This week, 5th graders began their final unit of study for 5th grade math which entails taking all of the skills we’ve learned so far this year, reviewing them, and solving more multi-step complex problems that integrate all of the skills. We are starting off with multiplication and division first, which will continue into next week as we apply these operations to complex volume problems.

ELA:

5th grade readers continued their reading of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, discussing symbolism and the meaning behind images in the novel. We compared and contrasted different characters’ reactions to historical events and injustices, as well. They took an open note grammar test on Friday, so be on the lookout for those grades. Students did a fabulous job presenting sonnets at Spread the Word on Wednesday. Bravo to them!

Next week, 5th grade will continue reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and begin a mix of ERB prep and continued grammar instruction with a test planned for April 25th. Please note that their Roll of Thunder comprehension and response packet will be due that day, as well.

Social Studies:

Fifth grade has been working hard on their research papers! I am proud at how well they have picked up the research and outlining it takes to write a paper. We have also begun and will continue our work on humans’ impact on the geography of North America. This will lead us into our final quiz in North America before we finish the year with Africa and Europe.

Science:

Fifth graders finished their interactive periodic table this week. They shared properties about their favorite element in a fun and entertaining way. They also learned about compounds and molecules and how elements interact to make new substances. Next week, Teacher Cadet, Miss Maya Bundy, a Cooper alumni, will teach the class about density and polarity. The students will experiment with oil, food coloring, and water to see the properties of the substance and how they react.
