New Year, New…?
Happy New Year to all! I hope everyone enjoyed their break and are ready to finish the school year strong! Here in middle school, we have already started talking about what a new year brings and what it could mean to them individually. I know that when I was younger, the idea of a resolution and bringing about great change always seemed overwhelming. Now, it is a time of reflection and finding small ways to improve that make a big difference. The middle school has done a fantastic job with choosing their “one word” for 2025, and I am impressed with how thoughtful they were about choosing them and how they hope to accomplish the word they chose throughout the year. I hope that, no matter what, you and your family are using this time to find happiness and make positive changes in your lives. May 2025 be an opportunity to look back a year from now and celebrate all that you’ve achieved!

Math:
This week, 5th graders dove right back into decimal operations like adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Next week, we’ll continue these operations, learn new strategies to solve them, and apply them to real-life scenarios.
ELA:
As 5th grade returned from break, readers dove right back into their nonfiction study. Readers received individual nonfiction texts based on the interests they expressed before break. We began reading these texts and practicing in depth note taking based on our knowledge of main ideas, supporting details, and text structures. 5th grade also began a grammar study of verbs, with a test on 1/15.
Next week, readers will begin condensing and transferring their information into “Pocket Guides” as their final project which is due 1/24. Be sure to begin studying for the grammar test next Wednesday!
Social Studies:
Fifth grade had a great week with the beginning of our unit on the continent of South America. We have begun with the geography of the area and will move into individual countries next week. This unit will cover all major landforms and countries including their societal and economical impacts.
Science:
Fifth graders learned about the characteristics of living this week! They looked at plants under the microscope to learn about plant cells up close. They learned about the organelle’s functions in cells. They also presented their research about keystone species. Next week, they will continue to learn about plants and photosynthesis.
