Dance the night away!

Now that we are moving past the “season of love,” students are counting down the days to our middle school dance! The spirit club has done a fantastic job making signs and getting the school prepared for a night of Hollywood festivities. Reflecting back on this time myself, I remember the excitement and nerves of going to my dances at school and all the fun (and awkward) moments. These are a great time for kids to let their personalities shine and allow them to create lifelong memories. As the time approaches, this would be a great opportunity to talk to you children about your experiences with your time at dances and how much fun they were. I am sure many of them are nervous or anxious about dancing or dressing up, so talking to them beforehand is a great way to calm the nerves. Tell them to bring their dancing shoes, cause you know we (as a staff) will be ready!

Math:

This week, 5th graders kicked off unit 6 by applying our decimal mastery to multiplying and dividing by powers of 10, then applying that to conversions of metric measurements. During next week’s shortened week, we will briefly review fraction operations like adding and subtracting mixed numbers with uncommon denominators so we can apply those skills to more applications later!

ELA:

5th grade writers continued drafting their GOAT arguments this week, with a focus on counter arguments and thorough elaboration in their rewrites. These essays are due February 20th for publishing. Students also began a vocabulary study, with a test planned for 2/19.

Next week after February break, writers will edit, publish, and share their essays with their peers. Be sure to begin studying vocabulary words now for next week’s test.

Social Studies:

Fifth graders took this week to work on our black history month projects, instead of starting our next unit on South American cities and culture. Each student chose a famous South Carolinian and created a poster board on their person. They have done a fantastic job so far and we will finish them next week and then start our next unit.

Science:

Fifth graders swabbed the school this week! We are investigating the pets’ cages, outdoor lockers, teachers’ computers, and even the bathroom floors. The fifth graders are also learning about how to write proper scientific procedures, detailed hypotheses, and descriptive background research. Next week, they will finish collecting their data and start to write their conclusions.

Important Dates:

February 17th -18th – February Break (No School)

February 21st – Middle School Dance 6:30pm-9:00pm
