THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!

With only one week of school left before we go on break, I am sure everyone is counting down the days until they can relax and enjoy time with their friends and family. Everyone looks forward to this time to be able to enjoy the holiday season and look back and reflect on the year. I look forward to next year, turning the page to 2025 and being able to continue on with a great school year. During this time, I hope everyone is safe in their travels and truly enjoys these two weeks. With only one week of school left, the countdown has definitely begun in middle school and we all look forward to a wonderful end to 2024 and a festive school week to end the year!

Math:

This week, we took our test over multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers. Next week, 5th grade mathematicians will begin their 5th unit on decimals and decimal operations. We’ll start off strong by exploring decimal place value, comparing decimals, and rounding decimals.

ELA:

5th grade writers edited, published, and shared their personal stories this week! We so enjoyed bonding over these true stories as a class and proudly hung them on the “Featured Class” wall! Students also tested on vocabulary Wednesday, so be sure to inquire about their scores.

Next week, 5th grade will start a nonfiction reading unit, exploring the ways nonfiction is formatted and presented to find main ideas and supporting details for various topics! We will start a new grammar unit, but will not be tested until well after break 1/15.

Social Studies:

Fifth grade finished up American and Canadian geography and have begun a mini unit on the other North American countries. Students will be doing a project on a country they chose and researching it onto a slide show presentation. Just like our U.S. project in which they chose a state, I am allowing students to bring in food from their country if they choose next Thursday, the 19th (no nuts please).

Science:

Fifth graders learned about microscopes this week. They learned about the parts, how to use one, and how to make a wet and dry mount to observe different specimens. They collected different things they wanted to see on a microscopic level to practice their new skills. Next week, they will continue to use the microscopes to learn about living things that we cannot see with the naked eye.

Important Dates:

December 20 – Holiday Extravaganza & PJ Day (½ Day – 11:30 Dismissal)

December 21-January 6 – Winter Break (return on Tuesday, January 7)
