New Year, New…?

 

Happy New Year to all! I hope everyone enjoyed their break and are ready to finish the school year strong! Here in middle school, we have already started talking about what a new year brings and what it could mean to them individually. I know that when I was younger, the idea of a resolution and bringing about great change always seemed overwhelming. Now, it is a time of reflection and finding small ways to improve that make a big difference. The middle school has done a fantastic job with choosing their “one word” for 2025, and I am impressed with how thoughtful they were about choosing them and how they hope to accomplish the word they chose throughout the year. I hope that, no matter what, you and your family are using this time to find happiness and make positive changes in your lives. May 2025 be an opportunity to look back a year from now and celebrate all that you’ve achieved!

Math:

This week, 6th graders started the year strong by continuing our understanding of equations and comparing them to the relationships between graphs and tables. Next week, we’ll explore exponents in equations, use graphs to understand speed and ratios, and begin reviewing for our Unit 4 assessment.

 

ELA:

As 6th graders returned from break, they received their longform nonfiction texts (based on previously expressed interests) to begin reading closely. We reviewed text structures and the role of narratives in factual texts. Readers began to take thoughtful notes which will help them build future lesson plans. We also picked back up in grammar, studying conjunctions and clauses with a test planned for 1/15.

 

Next week, readers will start building mini lesson plans based on their nonfiction reading – all to be taught to 3rd and 4th grade classes. These plans are due 1/22. Be sure to begin studying now for their grammar test next Wednesday!

 

Social Studies:

Sixth grade has begun our unit in ancient India. This unit will cover geography, ancient and present day India, Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as India’s role in ancient and present day economies to the world. Next week we will begin our work on their Hinduism project which I know they are looking forward to. 

 

Science:

The sixth graders learned about the characteristics of living this this week! They looked at plants under the microscope to learn about plant cells up close. They learned about the organelle’s functions in cells. They also presented their research about diseases that changed history. Next week, they will continue to learn about other branches of living things using the microscope.
