Dance the night away!
Now that we are moving past the “season of love,” students are counting down the days to our middle school dance! The spirit club has done a fantastic job making signs and getting the school prepared for a night of Hollywood festivities. Reflecting back on this time myself, I remember the excitement and nerves of going to my dances at school and all the fun (and awkward) moments. These are a great time for kids to let their personalities shine and allow them to create lifelong memories. As the time approaches, this would be a great opportunity to talk to you children about your experiences with your time at dances and how much fun they were. I am sure many of them are nervous or anxious about dancing or dressing up, so talking to them beforehand is a great way to calm the nerves. Tell them to bring their dancing shoes, cause you know we (as a staff) will be ready!

Math:
This week, 6th graders applied their knowledge of rates and ratios to other proportional relationships like the area and circumference of circles. They took their Unit 5 test on Wednesday. During our shortened week next week, we’ll use fractions and decimals to describe increases and decreases as we kick off unit 6.
ELA:
6th grade began drafting their information pieces this week. Journalists approached rewrites with questions like, “Am I being clear?” and “What might an average reader want more information about?” 6th grade also began a vocabulary study, with a test planned for 2/21 (date changed since we will be out some next week).
After February Break, journalists will edit their informative articles and publish them to the class blog, which we will be sure to share with parents when launched! Be sure to have your student start studying for next week’s vocabulary test.
Social Studies:
Sixth grade has taken this week, before starting our next unit on Buddhism and present day India, to work on our black history month projects. Each student chose a famous South Carolinian and will be making a poster board on that person. We will finish this project next week and then begin our next unit.
Science:
The sixth graders had a great time at the marsh! They learned, first hand, ways the marsh acts as a buffer, protecting our shoreline. They took their experiences and applied them to their plans. Lots of the groups have already started building their models. They will finish up their models over the next few weeks. The presentation will be Thursday, March 7th at 2:00.
Important Dates:
February 17th -18th – February Break (No School)
February 21st – Middle School Dance 6:30pm-9:00pm
