Student-Led Conferences
First graders truly blew us away this week with the confidence, responsibility, and independence they showed while leading their own conferences! It was such a special experience watching our scholars take ownership of their learning and proudly guide their families through their hard work.Students gave their parents a meaningful glimpse into their daily classroom lives by sharing math equations they created completely on their own and explaining the strategies they used to solve them. They also showcased their reading “powers,” demonstrating how they use strategies, fluency, and comprehension skills when reading their just-right books. In addition, scholars highlighted pieces of writing they are especially proud of and reflected on the goals they are still working toward.We are incredibly proud of the tremendous growth we have seen in our first graders this year. Watching them take the lead and speak so proudly about their learning was truly a joy!
Exploring Poetry in First Grade
First graders are beginning an exciting new unit focused on reading and writing poetry! This week, we introduced scholars to the world of poetry and explored how poems can look and sound different from other types of writing. Our scholars are building on the reading and writing skills they have developed throughout the year and applying them in new ways as they learn about poetry. As they read more poems, they will begin using these ideas to inspire their own creative writing. As part of this unit, students will also begin preparing for our annual poetry celebration, Pass It On, where they will have the opportunity to share their learning and love of poetry. First graders are already excited to dive into new poetry books and discover all the creative ways poets express their ideas.
Dock Street Theater
On Wednesday, our First Graders took a trip to the Dock Street Theater to see the hilarious play Dragon Loves Tacos. Students were thrilled to sit up in the balcony and watch the performance from above. The show was full of laughter, and the actors did an amazing job interacting with the audience, which made the experience even more exciting for our scholars. First Graders watched with curious eyes and lots of giggles as the story came to life on stage. It was a wonderful experience for everyone! Be sure to ask your child what their favorite part of the play was!
