Shapes & More
This week in first grade, we kicked off an exciting new math unit all about shapes! Scholars explored both solid (3D) shapes and flat (2D) shapes. They examined a variety of shapes, including cylinders, triangles, squares, and more.Students learned that shapes can be sorted into different categories based on their attributes, such as the number of sides and corners. They also discovered that solid shapes can be combined to create new shapes. Ask your scholar to share what they’ve learned about shapes so far, we’re having so much fun exploring this unit!

Writing
This week, we began a new writing unit focused on review writing and expressing opinions. This unit connects to our Author Study project, where scholars will learn how to write thoughtful book reviews, explore their own personal collections, and discover a variety of amazing authors. Scholars were especially excited to share the items they collect and begin writing about them. We are looking forward to diving deeper into this engaging and meaningful unit!
Special Guest
This week, our first graders—and the entire TCS elementary school ,had the opportunity to welcome some special guests. We were honored to have Miles Phelps’ parents visit our class to teach us about food allergies. Scholars were excited to learn what food allergies are, how they affect people, and how to recognize the signs of an allergic reaction. We also enjoyed a fun read-aloud all about food allergies. First graders had a wonderful time learning important ways to stay safe and support others with food allergies.
