Warm Weather Brings Warm Feelings

With spring in full swing and summer’s heat just around the corner, these warmer days have everyone—myself included—thinking about fun times outside. This weather is what truly makes Charleston such a special place to live, allowing us to experience so many different experiences in such a small area. This weather also brings an end of school fever, with EVERYONE looking forward to the summer holiday. With that, it is important to remind ourselves that though we are nearing the finish line, it is important to remember how much we must still accomplish before we get there. From ERB testing, to class trips, Field Day to graduation and everything in between, this year is far from over and keeping our focus through it all has never been as important as it is now. So as we start to wrap up the year, let’s make sure we do not lose focus on all we are trying to accomplish, so we can truly enjoy the summer break!

Math:

This week in Algebra 1, we continued manipulating quadratic functions to get certain pieces we need, as well as using them to model and solve specific problems. Next week, we’ll practice and review solving for different parts of the quadratic function – they’ll also get a study guide for their FINAL Algebra 1 test on Wednesday!

ELA:

8th grade journalists selected topics to investigate and crafted their research plans this week. We discussed the importance of building out our investigations with trustworthy articles, observations, and lots of interviewing. These articles will be due April 23rd for publishing. Students also took an open-note grammar test on Friday, April 11th. They did such a lovely job presenting their sonnets at Spread the Word. Bravo, again, to our poets!

Next week, 8th graders will begin the rough drafts of their investigative articles. Having completed grammar and vocab for the year, we will begin ERB practice work during those times.

Social Studies:

The eighth graders are finishing imperialism and will be having their test next Thursday, the 17th. Study guides have been given out and we will be going over them together. They have also been working hard on their research papers. They are finishing up the outlining stage and should start the rough draft next week.

Science:

Eighth graders had a blast at the Natural History Museum. Our docent led us through history using fossils in the College of Charleston collection. The eighth graders also learned more about cladograms and how the evolution of traits passed on to common ancestors can be mapped out. Next week, the eighth graders will continue to  learn about heredity and evolution.
