Dance the night away!

Now that we are moving past the “season of love,” students are counting down the days to our middle school dance! The spirit club has done a fantastic job making signs and getting the school prepared for a night of Hollywood festivities. Reflecting back on this time myself, I remember the excitement and nerves of going to my dances at school and all the fun (and awkward) moments. These are a great time for kids to let their personalities shine and allow them to create lifelong memories. As the time approaches, this would be a great opportunity to talk to you children about your experiences with your time at dances and how much fun they were. I am sure many of them are nervous or anxious about dancing or dressing up, so talking to them beforehand is a great way to calm the nerves. Tell them to bring their dancing shoes, cause you know we (as a staff) will be ready!

Math:

This week in Algebra 1, we continued exploring quadratic functions and took a quiz on Thursday. During our shortened week next week, we’ll begin graphing the standard and factored forms of quadratic functions.

ELA:

8th grade readers kept their nonfiction reading up this week, while also engaging in book clubs and developing synthesis posters to capture their most important findings. We began another vocabulary study, as well, with testing planned for 2/21 (pushed back a day due to our break).

After February Break, readers will finish their book & synthesis posters (due 2/21). Be sure to encourage students to study for their tests next Friday!

Social Studies:

The eighth graders took the week before we began working on our next unit on imperialism to work on our black history month projects. Each student chose a famous South Carolinian and will be making a poster board about them. Once we finish this project we will move back into our new unit on imperialism.

Science:

Eighth graders are super into their science fair! Plants have been planted, petri dishes cultured, fungi sprouted, and pre-tests administered. They are also learning about how to write proper scientific procedures, detailed hypotheses, and descriptive background research. Next week, they will finish collecting their data and start to write their conclusions.

Important Dates:

February 17th -18th – February Break (No School)

February 21st – Middle School Dance 6:30pm-9:00pm
