A Beautiful Day!
Thank you to all who came to our spring choir concert! Students practiced, had fun with one another, and sang their hearts out! It was lovely to see their confidence grow as they sang some familiar tunes. We are so proud of the care, energy, and joy they brought to the concert!
How Land and People Shape History
This week in our South Carolina Study, we continued thinking about how land, geography, and people are deeply connected. Students learned about Indigenous peoples of what is now South Carolina and considered how different communities lived with and from the land. We also began learning about early explorers and settlers, including the ways European settlement changed the land and the lives of Native peoples. As we moved into conversations about enslaved people, students began to understand that South Carolina’s history cannot be told truthfully without recognizing the forced labor, knowledge, skill, and resilience of the people who helped shape this place.
Changing the Story
In reading and writing, students have been studying classic fairy tales and then using what they notice to write their own adaptations. They are thinking carefully about what authors choose to keep and what they choose to change. In their own stories, young authors are experimenting with new settings, changing characters, different events, and motivations. Many are also beginning to think about fairness, voice, power, and social justice as they reimagine familiar tales in new and thoughtful ways.
