A Week of Field Trips!

Rock Climbing

We loved starting our week in such a fun way! Rock climbing was a blast and we enjoyed watching second graders use their tools in their tool belt, challenge themselves and cheer for each other on the rock wall! During our time rock climbing, students were independent in choosing what wall they wanted to climb ranging from less challenging to more challenging! We loved seeing students grow their confidence while climbing and continue to challenge themselves by trying different rock walls. As classmates made it to the top, they were greeted with supporting high fives after repelling down. We look forward to our next rock climbing field trip where we will encourage students to achieve new climbing goals and practice persistence while climbing!

Magnolia Gardens

During our time at Magnolia Gardens second graders were given the opportunity to observe many different birds in their natural habitat. Second graders used binoculars to spot birds of prey, song birds, water birds, and other animals. Students stayed very quiet during our walk on the trail to listen for birds and try to locate and identify each bird they heard! Second Graders highlights of our Magnolia Gardens field trip were spotting baby egrets, watching a blue heron fly, observing mallard ducks, seeing a snapping turtle cross our path, and spotting many alligators!

Even or Odd?

Second Graders have started a new math unit: Equal Groups! Students worked with counters to share equal groups of objects and made pairs to define the terms odd and even. Second graders learned that groups which can be made into two equal groups are called even numbers, and groups that can be made into two equal groups with one leftover are called odd numbers. Students worked in groups to determine what numbers were even and odd up to 20 by creating  addition equations. Students learned that an even number + an odd number = an odd number, but an even number + an even number and an odd number + an odd number both = an even number! Second graders also practiced skip counting by 2 counting by even numbers and odd numbers.
