Advice from a Tree

By Ilan Shamir

Dear Friend,
Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of a greater source
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Summer
The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter
Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night.
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light
Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots
Enjoy the view!

Cheers to another school year! Good luck to our graduates!

Math:

This week, 5th graders reviewed for and took their unit 8 final test. Next week, we’ll start working on a fun planning/budgeting project to apply what we’ve learned throughout the year!

ELA:

When I was able to see 5th grade this week after administering tests, we took time to set reading/writing goals for the summer and finish our cursive writing workbooks. We reflected on all we’ve learned so far this year, and discussed what books and writing pieces stood out this school year.

Next week, 5th will guest read with some lower grades, take part in fun-writes to celebrate the end of the year, and enjoy a read aloud as a class!

Social Studies:

Fifth grade has been working hard on their final research papers! We have also been finishing up our last unit on humans and the geographic features of the United States. Their paper is due on the 20th. With them so busy and me away in Washington, D.C., I have decided that the final test will be cancelled since we have not had ample time to review.

Science:

The fifth graders prepared for their last science test this week! They presented their work on genetically-modified organisms and read more about industrial organic food in Omnivore’s Dilemma. Next week, we will wrap up our chemistry unit and go to the beach!

Important Dates:

May 23rd – No School (Teacher Work Day)

May 26th – No School (Memorial Day)

Upcoming Assessments and Deadlines:

May 20th- History Rough Draft due
