Akemashite omedetou

This week, our class has been immersed in learning about the Japanese New Year as part of our school’s Holiday Migration celebration! Each class studies and celebrates a different holiday from around the world, and we are excited to share what we’ve discovered. Third graders have been practicing how to say “Akemashite omedetou” which means Happy New Year in Japanese. They created nengajo (New Year’s cards), and learned about the Year of the Snake and other important symbols. They also made and decorated kagami mochi (rice cakes) with a daidai (a Japanese orange), adding their own wishes for harmony on paper bases. It’s been a fun and meaningful way to explore another culture and connect it to our theme of symbols.

In STEM, we’ve been working on some exciting hands-on projects. Last week, a guest group led the students in designing balloon-powered cars and experimenting with how air can propel objects. This week, they joined middle schoolers to dive into coding—one of the ways TCS builds relationships across grades. These projects have sparked curiosity and creativity, and the students have been so proud of their accomplishments!

As we head into these last two weeks before winter break, we are focusing on finishing strong. In math, we’re strengthening our fast facts daily. Revising our informational books in Writing and enjoying every minute of our book club discussions in Reading. It’s a busy and exciting time, and we are so proud of the growth they are showing each day!
