All About Birds!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Second Grade’s Bird Study Presentation! We are so proud of the hard work these students have put into their project. From writing persuasive essays, researching their bird, typing their words into the computer, learning excellent computer skills, and practicing their presentation skills we are blown away by our students! Parents you will be receiving your students’ powerpoint presentations for them to share with friends and family. Thank you again for showing your support for this amazing class!

Paper-mâché Birds

After students chose their bird they began building their bird out of paper mache in art class. Second graders build the forms for their birds based on the realistic measurements of their bird. They used recycled materials such as milk cartons, plastic bottles, newspaper, scholastic magazines, paper towel rolls, cardboard and many other things they found in the classroom. As students constructed the form of their bird they had to keep in mind their bird’s wings, feet, head, and beak. Once all forms were completed students started to use paper-mâché mixed with newspaper to help their bird’s shape come to life! Finally, students painted their birds using acrylic paint, mixing colors that matched their bird in real life! Second graders used fabric felt and other textiles to help add details and enhance their bird’s unique features! This process took months with lots of time and patients!

Birds of Prey

Second graders celebrated their hard work by taking a field trip to the Birds of Prey Center. As a class we got the amazing opportunity to get up close to many different species of birds. We learned a lot and even wowed the staff by being able to answer lots of questions about our birds. We enjoyed viewing the bird flight show and were wowed to see the birds fly right through the crowd and reenact how they catch their prey. We also enjoyed walking around and looking at many other birds we did not research and seeing eggs, nests being made and even babies!
