Light and Sound
This week in first grade, we kicked off an exciting new science unit all about light and sound! Our main focus was on light, as scholars explored how to identify brighter and darker areas in different images. We discussed ways to make spaces brighter or darker and why that might be important. Students also participated in a fun “museum walk” around the classroom, where they searched for and observed areas of light and shadow. They loved exploring their surroundings in a new way and sharing their discoveries with classmates. We are already having so much fun with this unit and can’t wait to continue learning more!
Poetry Rules
This week, we continued our exciting work with poetry! Our young writers are crafting beautiful, meaningful poems while using a variety of poetic tools and techniques. One area of focus this week was creating strong and creative titles—scholars put a lot of thought into naming their poems and truly impressed us with their originality. Students also made an important decision by narrowing their work down to two poems that they would like to be featured in our Pass It On book. We are so proud of their hard work and creativity, and we can’t wait for them to share one of their special poems with you during Pass It On!
Measure it Up
We have been busy diving into measurement this week, and our scholars are truly shining! Students have been representing their measurements in a variety of ways, including drawings, numbers, and words. They used linking cubes to measure different objects and discovered an important concept, measurement tools must be the same size to ensure accuracy. Our classroom is full of excitement as we explore all the different ways we can measure the world around us. Be sure to ask your scholar what they would like to measure next!
