Although it was a short week, it was one full of meaningful learning and unforgettable experiences.
In our Social Emotional Learning work, we’ve been exploring the power of optimism. We discussed how our brains sometimes jump to automatic negative thoughts. Students worked on identifying those unhelpful thoughts and reframing them to see a brighter side. They know this takes practice and that optimism is a skill that can be strengthened. We also talked about looking for the good in the world and believing in positive outcomes, even when things feel challenging. This work ties beautifully into our next SEL unit on perseverance, where we’ll continue to build the emotional tools to keep going, even when things get tough.
But the highlight of our week was our field trip to the International African American Museum. It was truly stunning. Our third graders were respectful, curious, and deeply engaged—they asked thoughtful questions and soaked in everything around them. You could see it in their eyes just how much they were learning. This experience connects beautifully to our South Carolina studies in social studies, especially as we continue learning about the Gullah Geechee culture.
