Climbing to New Goals
Second grade was so excited to return to the climbing wall. Students took time to set new climbing goals for themselves and spent their time achieving those goals. Many friends set goals such as reaching the top of a specific climbing wall, trying a new climbing wall, trying to climb 10 different climbing walls, timing how fast they can climb, and building their strength to climb longer! Students were persistent to keep trying even if the climbing wall felt challenging. We loved our day at the climbing wall and loved watching students cheer their classmates on and help them through challenging climbs!
Hello Multiplication
Second graders are continuing to work with even and odd numbers and sorting them accordingly. This week, students practiced creating different arrays of a set number of objects. This was challenging because odd numbers usually have one left over when building an array with pairs, but this week, students were asked to build an array with no leftovers. Students had to find the best way to build an array with numbers 1-25. After building an array, students learned how to identify rows and columns. Second graders learned that when you take one column and multiply it by one row, you get the sum of the array. Second graders are very excited to be learning about multiplication!
Parts of a Bird
Second graders are continuing their exploration of birds. They are beginning research on their own bird. This includes researching on teacher-selected websites about different parts of the bird. Each day, students learn about a part of the bird that is specific to their type of bird. They research and collect information for their presentations. After collecting all their data for that part of the bird, students use their typing skills to include this information in their PowerPoint. Students are working on the skill of reading nonfiction information, gathering research, and putting their findings into their own words.
