It’s been a great week here at TCS filled with learning, growing, and creating!
Human Body Study Grand Finale!Ā Ā
As fourth graders’ study of the human body came to an end, a grand finale was in order! This week to wind down studyingĀ how the human body works, the class was thrilled to welcome another guest expert into their classroom!
Dr. Ramin Eskandari, Pediatric Neurosurgeon and class parent, generously came in to teach a lesson on the brain and spine, and how they work together to function. Students were enthralled with getting to ask questions about parts of the brain, their function, and how it interacts with the rest of our bodies. An extra exciting part of Dr. Eskandariās presentation was the brain and spinal cord samples he brought into class for investigation. Students were awestruck by getting to see the different regions of the brain, their folds, and different textures that allow them to store neurons. These neurons are responsible for transmitting electrical and chemical signals throughout the body, enabling communication between the brain, spinal cord, and other organs.
It was a great pleasure to be able to have the opportunity for hands-on investigations to solidify concepts students are learning in class. Thank you Dr. Eskandari!Ā
Moon & Stars
As the human body unit winds down for fourth graders, they are embarking on another fascinating journey through space! Fourth grade students are studying how the moon, sun, and stars interact with one another and how it affects our planet.
To kick off this exciting investigation, students had the opportunity to visit Charlestonās Planetarium! Students were ableĀ to see Sun Struck, to dive into the importance of the Sun, and gain knowledge before we dive into lessons next week! Students also learned about why the days get shorter due to the placement and tilt of Earth, putting the Sun closer to set. Afterward, they went on a scavenger hunt and discovered even more about our solar system, like the other planets in the solar system and how and their orbit patterns. Students had a blast getting to know more about space, and are eager to dive into our Sun, Moon, & Stars lessons!Ā
Connecting Our Hive To ArtĀ
This week, our classroom observation hive helped us learn even more about honeybees! We discovered that bees do more than just make honey, they also make beeswax! We learned about the different kinds of bees, how they make beeswax, and how both bees and people use it.
To cross our lesson over into what weāre learning about in the classroom, fourth graders had a fun hands-on activity: making their own candles using real beeswax! It was so exciting to create something special while knowing exactly where our materials came from, and was a wonderful way to connect science and art!
