It has been another fantastic week here in the 4th grade! Student’s have been busy with a variety of projects and goals!
Reading
As our young historians continue to explore what life was like during the American Revolution, they have embarked on an exciting project! Building off their knowledge of why the American Revolution happened, students have been tasked with researching and writing about the lesser heard voices of the Revolution. Our fourth graders have been uncovering the stories of lesser known women, enslaved peoples, and those local to Charleston who contributed to the Revolution on both sides. Students have been using their research skills to find important details about their chosen person’s life and motivations for what side they supported. Fourth graders will then take this research and create a children’s book encapsulating who they were, what their lives were like, and what they stood for. We are so excited to see all of their hard work and knowledge culminate into this important project!
Science
Fourth graders have continued to investigate the city wide blackout in Ergstown. This week, students were asked why the hospital in Ergstown did not lose power during the outage. Building off their knowledge of energy sources and how they are converted to electricity, students were able to identify that the hospital must have a generator. The class was then able to identify that the generator was being fueled by the energy source gas, and converting the source into electricity to maintain power at the hospital. Students have been identifying and comparing what is a source of energy and how converters interact with them to create electrical energy. Fourth graders have been focusing on sources such as fossil fuels, solar energy, and nuclear energy, and how solar panels, wind turbines, and power plants convert these into usable electrical energy.
SEL
TCS’s newest social emotional unit is independence. The goal being to foster a sense of self responsibility for their learning, manage their time wisely, and take ownership of their academic progress. TCS values building confidence in our students, to prepare them for lifelong learning, and success that extends beyond the classroom. Thinking about growing independently, students are already being given the opportunity to use independent skills. Students got to participate in Move-Up Day this week, to better understand what the transition to middle school will be like. Students were thrilled to get to spend time with middle school teachers, learn the ropes, and even participate in clubs!
