
It’s been an awesome week in middle school. Secret Santas, lots of laughter, and excited hallways made it a fun way to wrap up the year. Students have been finishing projects and units, and we can’t wait to see everyone in the new year and hear about their break!

ELA: This week in ELA, 8th grade began a literary writing unit. We discussed what high school expectations we can look forward to when we are thinking about essays. Writers were then introduced to the short story All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury, sharing a first read-through and discussing the story’s themes in a round table discussion. 8th grade also retested grammar after a re-teach and review. Be sure to check out those updated grades.
After winter break, 8th grade will begin developing arguable thesis statements and outlines based on All Summer in a Day (that essay will be due January 22nd).
Science: This week in Science, our 8th graders explored why objects appear the colors they do through hands-on investigation and creative problem-solving. Students experimented with colored filters, observing how light changes as it passes through different materials and discovering why certain colors disappear when viewed through specific filters. They then applied this understanding in a playful and creative way by designing secret message posters for their classmates, blending science with imagination.
As we head into the break, I hope everyone enjoys time filled with rest, laughter, and curiosity. When we return, students will continue their exploration of light waves and refraction, building on the questions and discoveries from this week.
Social Studies: I hope everyone enjoys this holiday break! We will finish European revolutions when we return and then begin World War One. Have a great time with friends and family!
Math: This week in math, 8th grade mathematicians will continue exploring the volume and surface area of different three-dimensional figures. When we return from break, we’ll practice our created volume formulas and recognizing patterns between scale factor, surface area, and volume before taking our end of unit assessment.
