Endings

Endings, no matter how big or small, have always been hard for me. I get a wave of sadness and a sinking feeling when friends depart from a short visit to town or even for a small weekend break away from school like Memorial Day Weekend. I usually laugh this off as my anxiety working overtime, since I rationally know my friends and family aren’t leaving forever, that there will often be “another time.” However, when we reach the end of the school year, those sad ‘gut feelings’ hit a little harder. It is tough to know some of my kiddos are moving on to new schools, it’s hard to let go of the magic that happens every school year.

I was just talking to the 8th grade about stress and how we can use it to our advantage. This reminded me that the stressors we feel when things are coming to a close are probably our body just reminding us to be present, to practice gratitude, to ‘notice’ what we really care about. I sure do care about this school, and I know we’ve got a large community of middle schoolers who care about their 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade years. I know that love and care for their community might be showing up in their bodies as sadness or fear. So, let’s encourage them to face those negative feelings by naming what they will miss and being present within the moments they wish would never end.

Cheers to an incredible year of learning and growth. I’ll be pausing and taking it all in over these next few days, I invite you all to do the same!

Math:

The 6th graders have had a fun filled week between going to Ackerman Park and Top Golf, and working on a fun Summer Vacation Planning/Budgeting Project. Next week, we’ll head to Folly for a morning and continue planning for Field Day!

ELA:

This week, 6th grade enjoyed a Top Golf trip and really polished up our swings :) We all did some end of year grammar review and goal setting for 7th grade. We also organized our writing portfolios (look out for those next week!).

Next week, 6th grade will celebrate the end of the year with some fun-writes, our middle school annual karaoke party, a Folly Beach trip, and, of course, FIELD DAY! We can’t wait to end the year strong.

Social Studies:

Sixth graders worked hard and did a wonderful job on their research papers! I cannot believe the hard work they put in and how well they did with such a difficult assignment. To end the year we are finishing up our talks about Greece and Rome and will look forward to the end of year celebrations that go on during the last week of school!

Science:

The sixth graders and I reminisced about the school year this week! They presented their projects about genetically modified organisms, which were entertaining, interesting, and creative…as per usual. It is very hard to believe that they are moving on to seventh grade next week. This class holds a special place in my heart. They have grown so much this year!

May 26th – No School (Memorial Day)
