Thursday night, we hosted an information session for rising middle schoolers, and I truly wish everyone could have been there. As someone who has experienced this community both as a parent and now from the “inside,” I can honestly say it feels even more magical than I first realized.
The middle school teachers know your children so well. I’ve been in several schools, and I’ve never seen teacher-student relationships as strong and intentional as they are here. Hearing from parents, teachers, and Ms. Riley last night only reaffirmed that my own children are exactly where they’re meant to be. I’m so excited for them to continue experiencing the magic of Cooper Middle — something I know you already appreciate!

ELA: This week in ELA, 5th grade finished rewriting and editing their greatest of all time arguments. They wrote their arguments in cursive and were careful to make sure their final words followed a logical and convincing essay structure. 5th grade also studied vocabulary in preparation for next week’s test on 2/25.
Next week, 5th graders will begin their poetry study! We’ll be focusing on poetry and illustration in this reading and writing unit! Be sure to study for next Wednesday’s test.
Science: This week in Science, 5th graders explored why sensory systems are essential for animals. Students investigated how plants and animals use design, color, and other adaptations to attract or communicate with other organisms. Through a simulation, they created their own organisms with the goal of capturing another person’s attention, applying their understanding of sensory cues in a creative and hands-on way.
Students also explored the difference between instinct and learned behavior, sparking lively discussions about bears, dogs, and monarch butterflies and how behavior supports survival.
Next week, students will wrap up their Living Systems unit by exploring how all body systems and ecological systems work together within ecosystems.
Social Studies: Fifth grade has continued our study of our new unit which is the continent of Asia. They have also begun working on a project for Black History month. Each student chose an individual who contributed to our country and helped make the world a better place! They are creating a poster on them with the information they researched. Next week we will continue with both areas of study and start preparing for our self assessment project.
Math: This week in math, 5th graders wrapped up unit 6 with their end of unit assessment – which challenged them to apply their mastery of fractions and decimals to more real world examples. Next week, we’ll move onto unit 7 – which introduces the coordinate plane (ordered pairs, graphing shapes on a grid, etc) and analyzes properties of different quadrilaterals and triangles.
