Fifth Grade

From diving into science projects, to field trips to Hampton Park, to a few harmless pranks (like sending the entire 7th grade to Ms. Riley!), it was a week full of energy and fun and learning. Plenty of hugs and “see you laters” were shared as we head into the break.

I hope next week brings lots of rest, laughter, and quality time with family. We look forward to seeing everyone back in a week!

ELA: 5th graders enjoyed meeting Cassie and the Logan family in the starting chapters of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. We discussed how Mildred Taylor used dialect and figurative language to build a vivid yet realistic world. 5th grade also practiced punctuation, handwriting, and spelling with dictation exercises. We plan to test these skills after break on 4/17.

After break, 5th grade will continue their reading while also beginning a complimentary novel project on historic preservation and historic markers. We’ll do lots of reviews so they are prepared for their dictation test.

Science: In science this week, 5th graders started their Chemistry unit by exploring mixtures and how to separate them. Students created mixtures by combining solids with water then explored different methods of separating the different mixtures. After spring break students will continue exploring separating different types of  mixtures.

Social Studies: Fifth grade worked hard this week on learning about the connection between resources and human development in Asia. When we return from break we will be finishing Asia by looking and some geographical phenomena as well as humans and the environment. Have a safe break!

Math: This week in math, the 5th graders resumed unit 8 – which dives back into previously mastered skills from the year to review, enrich, and apply them. We spent some time with multi-digit multiplication and division in relation to volume, and began to revisit fractions. After Spring Break, we’ll resume our explorations with fractions before moving onto creating some deep thinking math questions of our own.
