It’s been an awesome week in middle school. Secret Santas, lots of laughter, and excited hallways made it a fun way to wrap up the year. Students have been finishing projects and units, and we can’t wait to see everyone in the new year and hear about their break!

ELA: This week in ELA, 5th grade researchers began filling research organizers with valuable facts and details about a topic that interests them. From Marie Antoinette to the history of Cowboys, our researchers are on the hunt for valuable info to support main ideas within their handmade “Pocket Guides” at the end of the unit. We also used our final days before break to review grammar concepts and begin a small study of verb tenses.
After winter break, we will finish up our research and begin organizing information to be transferred to our published pocket guides (due Jan 22).
Science: This week in Science, our 5th graders explored nutrient systems in both plants and animals. Students learned about photosynthesis and investigated the conditions plants need to grow and thrive, making connections between energy, nutrients, and living systems. Their curiosity and thoughtful questions guided meaningful conversations about how organisms meet their needs.
As we head into the break, I hope everyone enjoys time filled with rest, laughter, and curiosity. When we return, students will continue their exploration of nutrient systems, building on the questions and discoveries from this week.
Social Studies: I hope everyone enjoys this long holiday break! We are wrapping up Europe and will finish that unit the two weeks we return from break! Have a great time with friends and family.
Math: This week in math, 5th graders worked towards mastery of decimal addition and subtraction, and applied this knowledge to real-world scenarios involving things like money and weight. When we return from break, 5th graders will apply their previous mastery of the standard algorithm for multi-digit multiplication to decimals. We’ll do lots and lots of practice with this skills before moving on to division with decimals!
