Fourth Grade Artists!

Fourth graders have had another fantastic week enjoying the snow and working hard!

Math

This week, our mathematicians have been working on getting comfortable with addition and subtraction of seven digit numbers. By working with these large numbers, students also gain skills in rounding and making estimates to be able to do quick mental math as well as checking the reasonableness of their answers, and solving problems more efficiently. Along with working with these larger digit numbers, students have become more comfortable with decomposing numbers into more manageable parts, as well as borrowing in long form subtraction. Not only improving their skills in solving, but also deepening their understanding of digits and their values. We are also working on applying these skills to real-world situations. Whether it’s adding up the populations of several cities or figuring out the total cost of multiple items, we are encouraging students to think about how math connects to the world around them. This helps make math more relevant and engaging!

Art

The fourth grade class has been hard at work on preparing for their Artist of the Month event! This is an opportunity to showcase their creativity and share the process that making their art entails. Students drew from personal experiences to create prints using different mediums, as well as self portraits to illustrate their view of self and how they present themselves to the world! Alongside their artistry, students wrote about their pieces explaining how and why they created their pieces. These works were put on display for our community at their Artist of the Month event this Friday at 8:15am. We are so proud of our artists!

Enrichment

Students had the opportunity to attend a Charleston Stage play at the Dock Street Theater this week! TCS values and prioritizes students getting to have a multitude of learning opportunities through an array of experiences. Fourth graders loved getting to see “Last Stop on Market Street”, a musical adaptation of Matt de la Peña’s acclaimed children’s book. Along with the beautiful sets and musical numbers, the play focuses on themes like empathy, diversity, and community. We loved getting to hear students start having conversations with one another about the importance and relevance of these topics in their own lives. Students also loved getting to see some of their Charleston Stage teachers from earlier in the year, live and in action!

TCS Celebrated our 100th day of school this week! We loved getting to cheer on our kinder-buddies, dressed as 100 year olds, for their 100th day parade! TCS’s community loves celebrating and supporting each other at all milestones, both big and small.
