Here’s a look at what is happening in each of the classes:
What’s happening in Science?
Seventh graders have had a blast this week…literally…as we learn about our Solar System! They have considered whether exploring space is an effective option for colonization. After learning about the Biosphere II project that took place in Arizona, and how the mission was not deemed successful, they contemplated whether creating domes for civilization on Mars or the Moon would be a reliable option for us here on planet Earth. They have also learned about the similarities and differences between the planets in our solar system and picked a planet, or satellite, that they want to learn more about. With their research, they will create a billboard (poster) that will advertise the information they learned about to make people want to visit their planet. Next week, we will learn more about the solar system, our moon, and what makes day and night.
What’s up in Math?
This week in math, 7th graders explored different types of rigid transformations like translations, rotations, and reflections. They also took their IXL diagnostic test, which Ms. Allison will explain more about during Curriculum Night on September 6th. Next week, 7th graders will dive deeper into angular rotations and transforming lines, as well as take their Mid-Unit 1 Test on Thursday!
What’s happening in ELA?
Seventh graders began an exciting study of a variety of diverse, contemporary middle grades authors this week via the short story anthology Flying Lessons. Students have been closely examining the perspectives of major and minor characters within these stories, unpacking what these characters desire and what conflicts get in their way. We’ve considered inferences we can make about minor character thoughts and feelings using evidence based on their actions and dialogue.
Next week, we’ll begin to rank our favorite authors and organize into author-study book clubs. Seventh graders will more deeply consider the art of characterization and author’s craft when articulating their thoughts about characters’ point of view.
What’s going on in Social Studies?
This week, the students dove into the early Americas by looking at the early civilizations of the Inca, Maya, and the Aztec. Students then completed a research project looking at the different cultural Native American regions and creating slide show presentations. Students were then introduced to the European Exploration of the Americas.
Next week, students will dive into the specifics of the French, Dutch, and English colonization. Students will learn about the government put into place in their colonies before diving into the original 13 colonies. Students will end the week by using their new knowledge of the colonies and create their own colony with historic accuracy.
