Acting up with Charleston Stage!
We are so lucky to have Charleston Stage join us for two weeks. This week, during drama class, we got familiar with our acting tools. Second graders loved using their imagination, actor voice, and body language to express themselves! Students enjoyed playing the game ‘Character Walk’, which focused on acting like specific characters using our body language. We challenged ourselves to step into new characters we’ve never tried before! Second graders used their best actor focus for Charleston Stage!

Welcoming a Guest Expert!
Second grade welcomed their first guest expert this week! A member of our Cooper School community joined us from the Open Space Institute, a nonprofit organization, to discuss all things about the marsh. Our expert shared with us that we live in one of the largest marsh ecosystems compared to other states on the Atlantic coast. We shared our special place by the water and why it was important to us. Second graders learned about the marsh, the animals that live in the marsh, why we need to protect the marsh, and the importance of taking care of it. Ask your student what they learned about the marsh from our guest speaker!
Many of us learned that humans can help grow the marsh by building a living shoreline with just recycled oysters! If you wish to help take care of our marsh, we invite you to a marsh/beach sweep on September 20th, 1:00-3:00 pm at May Forest on Daniel Island.

Show your work!
Second grade mathematicians have been making great strides so far this year, and we have begun subtraction with double-digit numbers. Students are working bravely to solve tricky word problems and difficult subtraction equations. Students began using math manipulatives, longs, and cubes to identify place value and represent double-digit numbers. Working with a partner, students were able to represent the number, then explain how they would subtract or take away longs and cubes to solve double-digit subtraction equations. Students then go to work showing their work using their understanding of longs and cubes. They have been practicing drawing blocks in their math and showing their work on how they solve double-digit subtraction word problems.
