Happy April Break!

Book Clubs!

Second graders started a new reading unit this week learning all about story elements! To help make this unit even more exciting, second graders created book clubs! Students split into 4 different groups each focusing on their own book series. This week students focused on reading their books and discussing with their book club who the main and supporting characters were, the settings of the story, and who the narrators are based on facts from their book series. Students are enjoying the freedom of open conversations with their book clubs and being a part of something that many adults are also a part of.

Writing Bird Comics!

During our bird study presentation second graders will be showing guests their bird comics that they create! This week students began writing a personal narrative of a time they had a bird experience. Some students wrote about an experience they witnessed where a bird caught its prey while others wrote about a time they observed a bird resting in the water or on a tree. Students focused on having a beginning, middle and end, details about the bird’s appearance, their movement and sounds, added dialogue, and where they had this experience with a bird. Then students broke up their story into three parts adding an illustration to describe each part. Finally second graders turned their illustrations into a rough draft of their comic by adding dialogue and detail. We can’t wait to finalize our comics!

We are Optimistic!

As we progress through our final trimester in second grade we have a new social and emotional unit! During this unit we will be focusing on the words: optimism and persistent! Optimism means being hopeful and confident about the future. During centers, second graders took time to think about a word that will help them be hopeful and confident in their future. Students wrote the word, decorated it, and hung it on our wall to share with their classmates! If you walk into our classroom you will see a wall full of words such as: powerful, strong, playful, shining, energetic, concentrate, proud, happy, bright, helpful, love, inspire and many more!
