Halloween Carnival
Kindergarteners were so excited to celebrate the spooky holiday this week by wearing costumes and gathering in our backyard for a Halloween Carnival organized by the Middle School students! We were so excited to celebrate with our whole school, checking out their costumes, and playing games alongside them. Kindergarteners had so much fun as they bounced around from game to game, greeting all of their older friends in school. Our day wrapped up with some exciting costume awards as Kindergarteners celebrated all of our school’s winners. Happy Halloween!

Shapes In Our World
Students spent time this week discriminating between shapes and looking for recognizable shapes in our world. Students identified triangles in pizza slices, circles in cookies, and rectangles in windows. Using shapes, Kindergarteners crafted paper Jack-O-Lanterns of their own! Students were able to choose between squares, circles, and triangles to create their pumpkin’s eyes, nose, and mouth. We are so proud of Kindergarten mathematicians!

Reading and Writing with Patterns & Heart Words
Kindergarteners have been working hard learning to recognize, read, and write Heart Words during our phonics time. Heart Words are words with irregular spelling patterns that are not decodable or spelling patterns that we haven’t learned quite yet. These high frequency words are taught by separating the parts of the word that are phonetically irregular (marked with a heart) from the parts that are regular. This helps students understand the spelling and orthographically map the word, rather than relying on pure rote memorization. This week, brave readers and writers spent time locating these high-frequency “Heart” words during our reading workshop time and even writing pattern books using them in sentences!
