This week in third grade, we began talking with students about test preparation through the lens we value most: not as pressure, but as a set of lifelong skills that help children approach any assessment with confidence, care, and independence. We are teaching students how to slow down, read questions closely, notice what is really being asked, and think critically about which answer is the best fit. We want them to build habits that will serve them well far beyond this season of school, including perseverance, attention to detail, thoughtful problem solving, and trust in their own thinking. Our goal is to help students see themselves not just as test takers, but as capable learners who know how to approach a challenge with focus and confidence.
As we head toward spring break, we are still very much finishing strong in true TCS fashion. In science, students wrapped up Force and had a great time experimenting with their carts, next up Motion. In math, we went deeper into elapsed time, using both our real daily schedule and some playful made up schedules, including Shade’s vacation itinerary, to make the work meaningful and fun. Students also finished editing their prize poems, which we cannot wait for you to hear at Pass It On. They voted on their favorite tribute poem, a reminder of how much we value student voice and choice in our classroom. Alongside all of this, we continued our conversations about optimism, friendship, and the many small moments that make a week in third grade at TCS feel so special.
