Place Value Strategy
This weekend second graders learned that when adding three digit numbers sometimes you need to compose (make) a ten, from ten ones, or make a hundred, from ten tens. Students were given a set of equations and worked in partners to determine what equations you would need to compose or not need to compose without solving. As second graders rocked this week they worked with 3-digit numbers and practiced composing a ten and a hundred in the same equation! Throughout this unit second graders are also using base-ten blocks, base-ten diagrams, expanded form, and other equations to build understanding and show place value reasoning!

Creative Centers
Second graders really enjoyed centers this week! Each week students participate in centers that go hand in hand with what they are learning in each subject along with one fun hands-on activity. This week students had fun playing a math game called “Five in a Row”, creating poetry collages out of recycled poetry books, creating a class acrostic poem titled “The Cooper School Rocks”, and knitting. Centers are a time for students to practice what they have learned while learning new skills in a fun and entertaining way with friends!

Let’s Make Glue
Second grade glue scientists have been working hard in the lab (classroom)! Scientists experimented with four different ingredients (flour, cornstarch, salt, and baking soda) to learn which ingredient would be the stickiest when mixed with water. From there, students wrote a design argument where they wrote the goal of their experiment, the ingredients they would use to achieve their goal, and the purpose of them choosing those ingredients. Scientists stated the portions of each ingredient and mixed them together to create their own glue. Scientists tested their glue by sticking beans to paper! Ask your scientist what ingredients they used to make glue!
