Let’s Make Glue
Second-grade glue scientists have been working hard in the lab (classroom)! Scientists tested four ingredients (flour, cornstarch, salt, and baking soda) to determine which would be the stickiest when mixed with water. From there, students wrote a design argument outlining the goal of their experiment, the ingredients they would use to achieve it, and the rationale for choosing those ingredients. Scientists specified the quantities of each ingredient and mixed them to create their own glue. Scientists tested their glue by sticking beans to paper! Ask your scientist what ingredients they used to make glue!
St. Patrick’s Day
Tuesday morning, students arrived at school to find shiny shamrock necklaces covering our backyard with their leprechaun traps looking like they had been tampered with. After a St. Patrick’s Day-themed morning meeting with their class, all of The Cooper School students ran outside to listen to a read-aloud by our fifth-grade friends, “How to Catch a Leprechaun”. After clusters went to find their own shamrock necklaces with their name on them, and check on their leprechaun traps. Although no leprechauns were trapped, each cluster found a note written by their sneaky leprechaun friend. After students found their necklace, they read the fun limerick poem attached to it. Students in each grade helped each other find necklaces and read tricky words. We love our second-grade students for being so helpful and kind! Thank you to the Middle School Spirit Club for setting up a fun morning for everyone to enjoy!
Creative Centers
Second graders really enjoyed centers this week! Each week, students participate in centers that are aligned with what they are learning in each subject, along with a fun hands-on activity. This week, students had fun playing and completing a St. Patrick’s Day wordsearch, creating poetry about a place they live to take after “Where I Live” by Maxine Kumin, creating a class acrostic poem titled “The Cooper School”, and designing their own glue bottle. Centers are a time for students to practice new skills they have learned entertainingly with friends!
