Guest Experts
This week, A$iahMae, a Poet Laureate of Charleston, visited our second graders to share their love of poetry and inspire students! During their visit, they talked with students about how poetry can tell stories, express feelings, and bring people together. They also led a creative writing workshop where students made their own zines using poems from our community’s Pass It On books. By reading these shared works and adding their own voices, the students discovered that their words are important and that they are part of a meaningful storytelling community. Students enjoyed sharing their work with another poet and asking them questions about the process of writing poetry.
Even or Odd?
Second Graders have started a new math unit: Equal Groups! Students worked with counters to share equal groups of objects and made pairs to define the terms odd and even. Second graders learned that groups that can be made into two equal groups are called even numbers, and groups that can be made into two equal groups with one leftover are called odd numbers. Students worked in groups to determine what numbers were even and odd up to 20. Second graders also practiced skip counting by 2, counting by even numbers, and counting by odd numbers.
Making our Glue Stronger
Second graders are continuing to experiment and collect data on different types of ingredients that may or may not work for their final glue. Students have been using the scientific process of making predictions, testing, and collecting results. This week, students tested the strength of properties. Using household ingredients, paper clips, and washers, students set up an experiment and tested it. After their ingredients dried, they counted the number of washers each ingredient could hold. Second graders were shocked when corn syrup could hold up to 10 washers!
