St. Patrick’s Day
Monday morning students arrived at school to find shiny shamrock necklaces covering our backyard. After a St. Patrick’s Day themed morning meeting all of The Cooper School students ran outside to find their own shamrock necklace with their name on it. Once students found their necklace they read the fun limerick poem attached to it. Students of each grade helped each other to find necklaces and read tricky words. We love our second grade students for being so helpful and kind! We ended our St. Patrick’s school day by sharing fun ways to catch a leprechaun and laughing with each other!
Math
This week second grade students focused on ways to add and subtract within 1,000! Students used line graphs to help them recognize that when numbers are relatively close, they can count on or count back to find the difference. Students also practiced solving equations using base ten diagrams and expanded form to help them focus on place value without having to compose or decompose numbers. To end the week we introduced the idea that when adding three-digit numbers, it is sometimes necessary to compose (make) a hundred from 10 tens. Students use all this information to choose the best way to answer each equation.
Creating Poetry
Second graders are getting ready for Pass It On by writing thoughtful and creative poetry. Students focused on the use of line breaks and creative language to paint the image of their writing to their reader. Students have enjoyed sharing poems with each other and giving feedback to classmates. As second graders, they are challenged to go above and beyond their everyday language and continue their thoughts onto paper. Poetry is a tricky lesson to grasp and we are so proud of this class for working hard and staying focused!
