Inuit Culture
Second graders spent last week learning all about the Inuits and their food, clothing, transportation, and shelter. This week, we learned all about Inuit culture. Inuit people are indigenous to the Arctic and are culturally distinct from other groups. We learned that the Inuits valued family, music, and the spirit world. We also learned that they loved art! The Inuits would make carvings out of animal bones and build Inukshuks out of rocks. Second graders created their own Inushuks this week using paper rocks. To support their learning of the culture, students also created replicas of transportation, clothing, and the Inuit language. Students are excited to share their Inushuks and teach you why the Inuit people built them.
Reading Comprehension
Students took this week to dive deep into our reading unit, all about reading comprehension. While we always discuss the class reading with them, this unit focuses on students reading and answering questions about their text independently. Reading comprehension is a vital part of our literacy. Our goal is for students to understand the meaning of the words and sentences, use information they already know to make sense of the text, and be able to keep track of the text while they are reading. Students are learning how to read information, answer questions, and put their thoughts on paper using their own words!
Thankful
