Finding Awesome Everywhere!
This week second graders are working on how to write an opinion of what’s awesome! Opinion writing is our students’ way of demonstrating both what they think and why they think it. As second graders, we believe lots of things are awesome. As a class we brainstormed a ‘Second Grade Awesome List’. That list included: second grade projects, playing games with a new friend, when your pet snuggles with you, watching a movie in your pajamas, exploring new places, and much much more. Second graders focused on giving lots of different reasons and adding a lot of exact, true-to-life details to make their writing strong. We invite you to ask your students what they think is awesome!
Amping Up Reading Power!
Our reading power is getting stronger and stronger everyday! While students get stronger they face new reading challenges. This week second graders are focusing on their reading voice. Students are practicing matching their voice with punctuation; meaning adding excitement in our voice when we see an exclamation point and taking a breath when we see a period or comma. Students are also practicing recognizing dialogue and changing their voice to match characters in their fiction books. Students have been enjoying practicing their reading voices by reading in front of their classmates.
Charleston History!
Second graders have been enjoying learning about Charleston’s history, how our settlers moved to the new world, and how the different landmarks of Charleston got their names. We learned that King Charles, the king of England, awarded the province of South Carolina to the 8 Proprietors who brought 150 settlers over to settle a colony here. Second graders enjoyed acting out these scenes. We all shared a great laugh calling classmates Kings, Proprietors, and settlers!
