Measurement
This week, second graders began a new unit. Students began learning about measurement. We started by using tools from other units to understand how they can support us in all ways in math. Using centimeter cubes and 10-centimeter tools, students have been practicing measuring all types of reptiles. We came together and created a set of rules to follow when measuring to make sure we are making accurate measurements. The understanding of different units of measurement will help students learn how to apply and use rulers and other tools for measuring!

Animal Research
Second graders have been hard at work at becoming experts on their marsh animal. On teacher-selected websites, students have been collecting research about their animal. They are learning about what their animal eats, predators in the marsh, and most importantly, why their animal is important for the marsh. This is a skill that is challenging at first, but it allows them to ask questions and learn how to maneuver through research. With this skill, students will be successful in further research in the future. Students will be using their knowledge and research to help them write a non-fiction book about their marsh animal. They are becoming experts in the marsh!

Oyster Art
To represent their animals and important aspects of the marsh, students are creating oyster art. In art, Ms. Henslee is teaching students about watercolor and different ways to illustrate a marsh animal. After their illustrations are complete, students will take their animal and display it on an oyster. We love to incorporate art into our projects to help reinforce what we are learning in the classroom, as well as letting students shine with their creativity.
